After a week of League Cup and FA Cup action, the Premier League is back this weekend with Gameweek 23 of the Fantasy Premier League. This is the final Gameweek that managers can play their January Wildcard, (until 7th of February at 11:30am GM) Changes for Gameweek 23 need to be finalized by the 11:30am (GMT) on the 31st of January 2015. Lets check out our top tips for Gameweek 23 for Fantasy Premier League managers:
1) Andre Wisdom £4.5m (West Bromwich Albion)
It is that time of the season where the Tony Pulis effect kicks in, and his lower table strugglers turn into imposing defenses that are nearly impossible to crack. Pulis has now been appointed manager of West Bromwich Albion and has two clean sheets in a row in the league and are undefeated in all competitions in 2015. The Pulis effect is in full force. Those two clean sheets mean that West Bromwich Albion now have 8 clean sheets from their 22 matches, there are only two clubs (Southampton and Chelsea) who have had more clean sheets. So West Brom were already quite tidy at the back but with Pulis, the signs are there that they will be looking to grind out 1-0 victories or achieve safety one point at a time. With this in mind, on load Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom is our pick for Gameweek 23. Wisdom has been a starter all season, missing only the match against his parent club Liverpool, for which he was ineligible to play. At £4.5m Wisdom is a steal, and should fit into most budgets at the back. Gameweek 23 sees West Bromwich Albion at home to Spurs. This is followed by fixtures at Burnley (Away), Swansea (Home) and Sunderland (Away). That run should see a few more clean sheets coming Wisdom’s way in the coming weeks.
2) Jason Puncheon £5.5m (Crystal Palace)
Another change of manager mid-season at Crystal Palace is having the desired effect. Former Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew, who used to play for Palace, has brought with him a winning mentality that has seen Palace come from behind and win their last two games in a row in the league – as well as knocking third placed Southampton out of the FA Cup. One of the key players who is driving this upturn in form is winger Jason Puncheon. Puncheon has two goals and an assist to his name in his last two EPL matches. He’s renowned for his mazy dribbles on speedy Palace counter attacks, managing 7 league goals last season. With instructions from Pardew to not be afraid and have a go – it’s getting the best out of him. Gameweek 23 sees Crystal Palace at home to Everton, who have been struggling defensively this season – letting in 18 goals from their 11 away matches. That fixture is followed by matches against Leicester City (Awat) and Newcastle United (Home). If the feel good factor continues this weekend at Selhurst Park, Puncheon will be in the thick of it.
3) Graziano Pellè £7.8m (Southampton)
Our final third and final pick for gameweek 23 is Southampton’s Italian striker Graziano Pelle. Pelle was quite simply devastating in the early part of the season, which has helped him amass 8 goals and 5 assists in the league so far this season. He has the 4th most points of all strikers in the FPL this season, and is closing in on Sergio Aguero. One of the main appeals for Pelle is their opponents for Gameweek 23, Swansea. In gameweek 22 Swansea were torn to shreds by Chelsea in from of their own supporters, going down 5 nil. That was followed by 3-1 loss in the FA Cup at the hands of Championship side Blackburn Rovers. Swansea are certainly going through a turbulent time after the sale of Wilfred Bony. To make matters worse, Gylfi Sigurdsson is suspended until gameweek 26. So things are looking stacked in Southampton’s favour for Gameweek 23. Southampton then head to second last placed Queens Park Rangers in gameweek 24, which also sees Pellè carry a good goal scoring thread against a leaky defense.
