We now turn our attention to Gameweek 22 of the Fantasy Premier League, the second round where managers have their January wildcard available to them. Changes for Gameweek 22 need to be finalized by the 11:30am (GMT) on the 17th of January 2015. Lets check out our top tips for Gameweek 22 for Fantasy Premier League managers:
1) Ryan Bertrand £5.7m (Southampton)
After successfully negotiating a tricky away fixture at Manchester United in Gameweek 21, and picking up their 10th clean sheet of the campaign in the process, Southampton’s impressive defensive resilience is continuing into the second half of the season. Most critics expected Southampton to fade away as the season progress, after their bright start. But going into this weekends matches they sit third on the English Premier League table, ahead of the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United. On load Ryan Bertrand has been an ever present at left back for Ronald Koeman this term,, missing only one match (against his parent club Chelsea). Bertrand makes it into our top picks for Gameweek 22, which sees Southampton head up to Newcastle United away. Newcastle United, who are currently manager-less after parting company with Alan Pardew, sit in 19th place of the Premier League form table having taken just 4 points from their past 9 Premier League matches. After rebutting the star-studded attack of Manchester United, Southampton look like a sure bet to neutralize Newcastle. Looking ahead Southampton’s next three Premier League fixtures sees then at home to Swansea, away to Queens Park Rangers and then at home West Ham. So there are continued opportunities for more clean sheets on the horizon.
2) Stewart Downing £6.5m (West Ham)
Our second tip for Gameweek 22 is West Ham’s English in midfielder Stewart Downing. The converted winger Downing has been having a fantastic season deployed as a central attacking midfielder for Big Sam. Having grabbed his 7th assist of the season last weekend for fellow Englishman’s Andy Carroll’s goal, Downing looks to be returning to the form he showed pre-Christmas which saw him bad 2 goals and 2 assists in 4 matches. Gameweek 22 sees West Ham at home to the struggling Hull City, who sit in the relegation zone in 18th place (equal on points with Queens Park Rangers in 19th). Hull are in the middle of an injury crisis after both Jelavic and Hernández were forced to be withdrawn in their Gameweek 21 loss to West Bromwich Albion. West Ham, who currently sit 7th in the league, will be expecting to win this match in front of the Upton Park, and Stewart Downing will be a creative force they’ll look to to create scoring opportunities.
3) Ángel Di María £9.5m (Manchester United)
For those managers who loaded up on Manchester City midfielders during the festive season and looking to change things up given City’s next two opponents (Arsenal (Home), Chelsea (Away)), one option to look at is Angel Di Maria.
Di Maria has recently returned from injury and netted in the new year in the FA Cup against Yeovil. He looked lively against Southampton, but failed to hit the target from his opportunities – a sign that he’s yet to hit full speed following his return. The main draw card for Di Maria is Manchester United run of fixtures, which sees them play all three of the newly promoted clubs in the next four Gameweeks. This run of fixtures sees them visit 19th placed QPR (away) in Gameweek 22, and then Leicester (Home) in Gameweek 23, West Ham (Away) in Gameweek 24, and finally Burnley (Home) in Gameweek 25. So a double against QPR and Leicester then, who have the worst, and 3rd worst defensive records in the league. The loss to Southampton last weekend will see United keen to bounce back to form and keep pace for a Champions League spot.
