The weekend features matches from Gameweek 21 of the Fantasy Premier League, the first round where managers have their January wildcard available to them. It’s also the first round to be impacted by players leaving for the African Cup of Nations and the Asian Cup. (View details of which players are leaving Here). Changes for Gameweek 21 need to be finalized by the 11:30am (GMT) on the 10th of January 2015. Lets check out our top tips for Gameweek 21 for Fantasy Premier League managers:
1) Steven Gerrard £8.6m (Liverpool)
One man who has kicked 2015 off with a spark is Liverpool’s captain Steven Gerrard. Gerrard has 4 goals to his name this year already, after 2 goals in the Premier League against Leicester City on New Years Day, and another two in the FA Cup against AFC Wimbledon. He’s been in the news this week after announcing that he will leave Liverpool in the summer once his contract expires, and will join Major League Soccer club Los Angeles Galaxy. That gives him all the more to play for, with this been his final season in the Premier League for Liverpool. Gameweek 21 sees Liverpool away to Sunderland, who are averaging conceding 1.5 goals per game at home. Liverpool are starting to find their feet in-front of goal at last, having scored 9 goals in their last 4 Premier League matches. A thigh injury to creative summer signing Adam Lallana means Liverpool will be looking for other midfielders to step up and add that thrust from midfield. Gameweek 22 sees Liverpool against Aston Villa, who sit four places below then. Both are matches one would expect Liverpool to be pushing for a win in, so Gerrard is a potential for points.
2) George Boyd £4.6m (Burnley)
If you’re looking for a cheaper option in midfield during the January Wildcard window then one player hitting form to take a look at is George Boyd. With 2 goals and an assist in his last 4 Premier League matches, Boyd is certainly on an upturn in form, evident by Burnley holding reigning champions to a draw in Gameweek 19. At £4.6m, there are not many options for goal scoring midfield starters out there. Gameweek 21 sees Burnley at home to fellow relegation battlers QPR. QPR have the worst away defensive record in the league, having conceded 22 goals from their 9 home matches this season. Burnley have an easier run than most of the next few gameweeks, facing Crystal Palace (Home), Sunderland (Aaway) and then West Brom (Home) in Gameweek 24. All those clubs are in the bottom half of the table, so you’re got 4 matches on the trot against opposition Burnley really need to be flighting for or taking points from if they are to avoid relegation this season.
3) Wayne Rooney £10.8m (Manchester United)
As we noted in our analysis of Gameweek Fixtures 21-30, Manchester United avoid playing any of the “big four” clubs until Liverpool in Gameweek 30. A run that also includes playing all 3 newly promoted clubs by Gameweek 25 in early February. With that in mind, it’s our tip to beat the rush and jump on board the Manchester Untied bandwagon in Gameweek 21 with England captain Wayne Rooney. Rooney has been playing in a much deeper role in central midfield of late, with Mata, Robin Van Persie and Falcao ahead. But his 2 goals and an assist against Newcastle in Gameweek 18 showed that he can be just as impactful arriving later into the penalty area. Gameweek 21 sees Manchester Untiled at home to fourth placed Southampton, not the easiest match but still a chance of points. But then United face newly promoted QPR (Away) followed by Leicester (Home) for Gameweeks 22 and 23. Those look like plenty of points on the way for Manchester United players.
