This is it, the final countdown. It’s Gameweek 38, the final gameweek of the Fantasy Premier League for season 2014/15. Who will get relegated? Who will get a Fair Play Europa League spot? All will be decided on Sunday the 24th of May. As is tradition, all 10 EPL matches will start at the same time, and the drama will unfold throughout the 90 mins. Gameweek 37 saw the Saints open up the floodgates with an impressive 6 goal haul, including a hat trick to Sadio Mané. David Silva also added another two assists to his tally in Manchester City’s 4-2 win at Swansea. All transfers, line-ups and captain nominations for Gameweek 38 need to be locked in by the 11:30am (GMT) on the 24th of May. So lets dive right in and have a look at our top tips for Gameweek 38 for Fantasy Premier League managers:
1) Ashley Young £5.0m (Manchester United)
Our first tip for Gameweek 38 is Manchester United’s English winger come wing-back Ashley Young. Young is better know for his mazy, waving attacking runs in the forward wide area, where he came made a big name for himself under Marin O’Neil at Aston Villa. But you failed to break into the starting lineup at Manchester United under David Moyes. With the arrival of Louis Van Gaal at Manchester United and his preferred system of 3-5-2, it looked like Young would be one of the first players out the door last summer. But credit to Young, he adapted his game to the requirements of the left wing back role, and has played more minutes this season than his previous 3 EPL seasons. With United’s new formation, Young has now made himself a regular in the first eleven since February, with more attacking opportunities than earlier in the season. Young has 3 assists in the past 2 gameweeks, in a haul of 2 goals and 6 assists for the season. His menacing runs and weighted crosses make him a constant threat to defenders, and a potential source of points for FPL managers. Gameweek 38 sees Manchester United at 18th placed Hull City, who look like claiming the third relegation spot and heading down to the Championship next season. Hull have lost their past 3 matches and this one is a tough must-win match to end the season on. Manchester United will look to keep the pressure on Arsenal at the top of the table.
2) Christian Benteke £7.9m (Aston Villa)
Our second tip for Gameweek 38 is Aston Villa’s Belgian beast, Christian Benteke. After securing safety from relegation under attack minded manager Tim Sherwood, Aston Villa were punished on the weekend as Southampton turned up the flair and put 6 past Villa. It was a blip on an otherwise impressive final third of the season by Villa -and I’m sure Sherwood will be looking for a response from his players this weekend. Christian Benteke has been the form player of the past 3 months. Since March Benteke has 11 goals and an assist in 10 Premier League matches. That’s a run of better than a goal a game for 3 months – and boy oh boy didn’t Villa need those goals! Surprisingly, his ownership is still down at 10.5%, quite low for the form player. Gameweek 38 sees Villa back at home to relegated Burnley. It will be Burnley’s last Premier League match for the year, and you can expect and entertaining battle. Sherwood loves his sides to attack and create chances, so expect Benteke to be amongst the points once again.
3) David Silva £9.6m (Manchester City)
Our third and final pick for gmaeweek 38 is Manchester City’s little Spanish magician David Silva. Silva has been back to his best this month, as Manchester City rallied to fend off the challenge of Arsenal for second place on the EPL table. Silva has 5 goal assists in the past 3 gameweeks, including two last weekend. That has taken him to 12 assists for the season, equal second on the assists ladder – beaten only by Cesc Fabregas. Another gameweek like his past 3 and you can expect to see Silva sitting a clear second on the assists table come 5pm Sunday. His 12 goals have also helped boost Silva to be the 4th highest points scorer in the Fantasy Premier League this season with 188 points – bettered only by Eden Hazard, teammate Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez. Manchester City’s final game of the season is against 7th placed Southampton, by scored 6 goals out last match. Despite their impressive defensive record across the whole season, Southampton have failed to keep a clean sheet in their past 5 Premier League matches. Perhaps a sign that things are not quite what they were earlier in the season, and the importance of Fraser Forster. If both Southampton & Manchester City are as on form in attack as they were last weekend, we might have a real high scorer on our hands. Silva is a good pick for captain on form.
