It is time to look ahead to the second last gameweek of the 2014/15 season, Gameweek 37 of the Fantasy Premier League. Gameweek 36 marked a strong return to form for Manchester City, who powered 6 goals past poor old QPR. A hattrick from Sergio Aguero means he now has 8 goals from his past 5 premier league matches. Meanwhile Arsenal’s slip up at Swansea puts City in the box seat for a second placed finish with their superior goal difference. The upcoming gameweek 37 is a big one, with 11 premier league matches. There are double gameweeks for both Arsenal & Sunderland, offering a chance for FPL Managers to squeeze those last few ounces of points from their squads this season. All transfers, line-ups and captain nominations for Gameweek 37 need to be locked in by the 11:30am (GMT) on the 16th of May. So lets dive right in and have a look at our top tips for Gameweek 37 for Fantasy Premier League managers:
1) Jermain Defoe £5m (Sunderland)
Our first tip for Gameweek 37 is Sunderland’s England international Jermain Defoe. Defoe has rediscovered some for of late, with a goal and an assists in his last two matches – both of which Sunderland won to ease their relegation fears. That upturn has been driven by new Dutch manager Dick Advocaat, but more points are required for Sunderland to be assured of Premier League football next season. Defoe arrived at Sunderland in the January transfer window from Major League Soccer outfit Toronto FC. Since then, he’s managed 4 goals and 2 assists in 14 Premier League starts, giving him a FPL points per game score of 3.9 – ahead of the likes of Bony, Ings, Pelle and Berahino. Jermain is a proven Premier League scorer, having managed 10 goal plus season’s on 6 separate occasions – so he’s a nailed on starter for Sunderland. The main allure of Defoe for Gameweek 37 though is Sunderland double gameweek. With two wins on the bounce, Sunderland will face Leicester City at home, as well as Arsenal away. A double gameweek at 3.9 point per game gives an expected return of 7.8 points. The harder fixture on paper is Arsenal, but they went down to Sunderland on Monday night and are assured champions league football, so this might not be as straight forward for Arsenal as it looks.
2) John Terry £7.0m (Chelsea)
Our second tip for Gameweek 37 is Chelsea’s captain & rock at the back, John Terry. The Premier League champions have once again relied on their heroic John Terry and his defensive partners to forge a rock solid defense upon which to build their title push. Terry has started every Premier League match this season, quashing and concerns about his advancing years slowing him down. Terry and Chelsea have a league best 17 clean sheets from their 36 Premier League games this season. Terry has also been chipping in with goals, usually from corners or free kicks. Terry has 5 league goals this season, including 2 goals in his last 3 outings. Despite having wrapped up the title early, they still have two more matches against relegation battling teams. Gameweek 37 sees Chelsea visit 13th placed West Bromwich Albion. West Brom have been a solid defensive unit themselves this year, managing 15 clean sheets. So we should expect a low scoring affair there this weekend, and potentially an 18th clean sheet for Terry.
Chelsea’s final game of the season will be against 16th placed Sunderland. Sunderland are still yet to secure Premier League safety, so this could be an important match for them. But it’s yet another match where you could see Chelsea managing a shut out. So two easier fixtures for Chelsea to wrap up the season with them, and high chances of clean sheet.
3) Aaron Ramsey £8.8m (Arsenal)
Our third and final pick for gmaeweek 37 has to be an Arsenal player, and it’s Welsh midfielder Aaron Ramsey. Ramsey had a fantastic start to the season building on a stellar yet injury plagued 2013/14 campaign which saw him take his game to another level and hit the back on the net 10 times. That saw him become a ‘must have’ at the start of this season. But injury has once again played a big role in Ramsey’s 2014/15 season, with two stints on the treatment tables through winter. Since his return in mid-March, Ramsey seems to be his old energetic self. In his past 7 matches Ramsey has 3 goals and 4 assists, a very healthy return on investment indeed. His injuries have also turned many FPL Managers away from Ramsey this season, with his ownership currently at 12.9% – below the preferred Sanchez & Carzola. Arsenal’s double gameweek 37 sees them away to Manchester United, and then back home to the Emirates to take on Sunderland. Both look like difficult fixtures that could go either way on the day. But with potentially 180 mins to score or setup goals, you’d have to back Arsenal’s attacking talent to find the back of the net a few times across both matches.
