We are back this weekend for Gameweek 30 of the Fantasy Premier League. Last weekend was a great round for defense, with 9 clubs picking up clean sheets. Aston Villa, West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace all continued to ride the the good feeling high that their new managers have brought to them. Misery for Manchester City though, who went down to 19th placed Burnley and then were knocked out of the Champions League. With no Premier League clubs left on the Champions League, all attention now turns to the Premier League and the title run in. Can Chelsea be caught at the top of the table? Changes for Gameweek 30 need to be finalized by the 11:30am (GMT) on the 21st of March.
Lets check out our top tips for Gameweek 30 for Fantasy Premier League managers:
1) Stewart Downing £6.5m (West Ham)
Our first pick for Gameweek 30 is West Ham’s English midfielder Stewart Downing. This might seem like a bit of surprise move to some FPL Managers, given that West Ham are winless in 7 Premier League matches. But that run included games against 6 of the top 7 teams in the EPL. That means West Ham have played pretty much all their hardest games of the season already, and of the 9 rounds that remain, West Ham have the easiest run into the finish line. They have 8 matches against lower half of the table clubs, and one tough match against Manchester City in Gameweek 33. So while current form is not great, we are optimistic that Downing can get their season back on track. A quarter of FPL teams still have Downing, given his reasonable price and return of 5 goals and 8 assists in the Premier League so far this season. Gameweek 30 sees West Ham at home to Sunderland, who are coming off a 4 goal home defeat to Aston Villa – which was followed by the sacking of their manager Gus Poyet. It’s a nice place for West Ham to find some form and for Downing to return some points.
2) Toby Alderweireld £4.7m (Southampton)
Our second tip for Gameweek 30 is Southampton’s on load Belgium defender Toby Alderweireld. Much like West Ham, Southampton have a very favorable last 9 matches of the season. Other than matches against Spurs and Manchester City, their remaining 7 matches are all against teams in the lower half of the table. It’s a testament to Southampton’s defense then, that they have completed the majority of their top table matches, and yet they still have the best defense on the League having conceded only 21 goals in 29 matches, accumulating 13 clean sheets along the way. Toby Alderweireld, on load from Athletico Madrid, was a regular in the Southampton team in either defense or midfield, before picking up an injury at Manchester United in January. Last weekend Alderweireld slotted back into the starting eleven for their match against top of the table Chelsea, so is a trusted member of Ronald Koeman’s squad. Gameweek 30 sees Southampton at home to 19th placed Burnley. This fixture might not seems as straight forward as it does on paper, given Burley defeated Manchester City last weekend 1-0. But with Southampton’s impressive back-line, you can expect a few more clean sheets for them before the end of the season. Alderweireld price, at only £4.7m for a starting member of the best defense on the league, makes him a must have pick for us.
3) Diego Costa £11.0m (Chelsea)
Our third and final pick for Gameweek 30 is Chelsea’s big Spanish striker Diego Costa. Chelsea sit atop the Premier League table and Costa sits atop the top goal scorers of the season with 18 goals, having scored in Gameweek 29 against Southampton’s rock solid defense. What makes it more impressive is that Chelsea have played one game less then their main title rivals, and so have 10 games left this season, while the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal only have 9 more matches. That extra match for Chelsea will be against last placed Leicester City in gameweek 34. This extra match is a great opportunity that FPL mangers a can capitalise on in the run in to the finish line. With Chelsea knocked out of the Champions League and FA Cup, they can keep their squad fresh and focus on the EPL. Gameweek 30 takes Chelsea to 15th placed Hull City, a match that Chelsea will be expecting to win to keep their 6 point buffer at the top of the table. With 18 goals 28 matches, you should expect another 6-7 goals for Costa before the end of the season.
