It’s a quick turn around for Gameweek 25 of the Fantasy Premier League which will see a full round of fixture midweek. Gameweek 24 saw a disappointing Manchester City fail to overcome, a reminder that even Sergio Aguero isn’t an always on goal machine. Charlie Austin picked up a knock and is a doubt for midweek, Arsenal came crashing back to earth at the hand of Harry Kane and Southampton picked up their 11th clean sheet. Don’t get caught out with the midweek round of matches, changes for Gameweek 25 need to be finalized by the 19:30am (GMT) on the 10th February. Lets check out our top tips for Gameweek 25 for Fantasy Premier League managers:
1) Olivier Giroud £8.4m (Arsenal)
Our first tip for Gameweek 25 is Arsenal’s big Frenchman Olivier Giroud. Giroud has been in top form since returning from his 3 match ban due to his red card and Queens Park Rangers on Boxing day. He has 2 goals and 2 assists in the his past four matches, including a goal at champions Manchester City during their 2-0 win away from home. Arsenal suffered a setback in Gameweek 24 with a loss to north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur. Before that they were players some fantastic football, so will be looking to bounce back quickly. Giroud himself has had a very interrupted season; first missing 9 rounds due to a foot injury, then his red card suspension. Despite only 13 appearances, he has still managed to score 7 goals and 2 assists. Arsenal do score goals, and having a big guy in the box means he is going to get opportunities. Last season he has the 4th highest points scorers for strikers, managing 16 goals and 9 assists. His ownership last season finished at 22%, but it’s only 10.4% at the moment, so there is an opportunity for FPL Managers to capitalise on the slow adoption. Arsenal are back at home in Gameweek 25 to last placed Leicester City, where Arsenal have won their past 5 home league matches in a row. Leicester are averaging conceding 1.75 goals per game this season away from home and Arsenal have the best attacking record at home in the league this season, scoring 26 goals from their 11 home league matches (averaging 2.36 goals per game). So this match looks the tip of the round for attaching options. Giroud’s price will rise if he continues his current form, and that is likely given Arsenal won’t face any Champions League rivals in the league until April.
2) Jermain Defoe £6.0m (Sunderland)
With Charlie Austin picking up a knock in Gameweek 24 and Queens Park Ranger’s manager-less and struggling, many Fantasy Premier League managers will be looking for an alternative cheaper striker option. For that, look no further than England international Jermain Defoe. Defoe signed for Sunderland during the January transfer window, in a deal that saw American flop Jose Altidore head in the opposite direction to Major League Soccer. Defoe has slipped straight into the starting 11 at Sunderland and is straight back to doing what he does best, scored goals in the Premier League. From his first 3 matches he’s managed 2 goals and an assist, a healthy return for a striker valued at six million pounds. Jermain is a proven Premier League scorer, having managed 10 goal plus season’s on 6 separate occasions. With his form looking good, Sunderland fans will be happy to see the fixture list and see back to back home games against lower table clibs. Gameweek 25 arrives and sees Sunderland at home to manager-less Queens Park Ranger, then Gameweek 26 sees Sunderland at home to West Bromwich Albion. Both are fixtures Sunderland need to be getting points from if they are going to avoid relegation, and they’ll be looking to their in-form man Defoe to find the back of the net.
3) Branislav Ivanovic £7.3m (Chelsea)
You might expect that our third tip might be the man of the round, Harry Kane, but while he is playing some amazing football, Spurs take on Liverpool away from home in Gameweek 25 and have no match in Gameweek 27 – so reason to wait for anyone yet to adopt Kane. But our third pick is Chelsea right back Branislav Ivanovic. Ivanovic has been an attacking threat down the right flak this year, picking up 3 assists , 2 clean sheets and a goal in his past 5 premier league matches. His score of 122 points so far means he has more points than any Forwards this season, including the likes of Diego Costa, Sergio Aguero et all. So while his price tag may seem expensive, his points return from the investment is much more favorable than the most expensive attackers this season. In gameweek 24 Ivanovic grabbed the winning goal against Aston Villa to send Chelsea top of the table, 7 points clear of Manchester City. Gameweek 25 sees Chelsea at home to Everton, which is not the simplest of fixtures. But Stamford Bridge is a fortress this season, where Chelsea are undefeated in the Premier League and have let in only 4 goals from their 11 home league matches. That run has included 8 home clean sheets from the 11 games, so a clean sheet at home is highly probable – and Ivanovic as an attacking threat is a plus. After the international break Chelsea are once again at home in Gameweek 26, to 17th placed Burnley. Again that looks like a game that Chelsea will be expecting to win, and another high chance of a clean sheet at home. Chelsea defense is a very good investment under Jose Mourinho.
